Episode 9 - The Avengers

Download as mp3

Thanks again to Kevin from Made of Fail Productions for joining us and being our first guest!  You can see the many, many projects that keep Kevin busy at http://madeoffail.net

While I was editing the episode, DC announced that they are in fact working on a Justice League film.

I'm starting to think I dreamed up the Neil Gaiman Loki comment because I can't find it on his tumblr.

And now, for some silliness:

Disappointed in the number of Science Bros gifs available, but this makes me giggle. Found here

This more than made up for it. Much more here and there's even a video here which is worth the watch.
One more, just because I can:

  1. Initial reaction on the Avengers director announcement: YAAAAAAY IT'S JOSS THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOOOOooome, Coulson's fucked isn't he?

Funnily, I completely forgot about that until it happens in the movie. And spent most of the credits kicking myself.

I've seen everything in the Movie-verse, except the Incredible Hulk, and omg Avengers was worth the wait. And I've been waiting since "Samuel L. Jackson has a cameo in Iron Man OMG NICK FURY'S IN IT." Seen it twice already- once opening weekend, and then two weeks later because my sister missed SCHWARMA first time around. Just, everyone was so perfect, the script was perfect, even the silly bits worked. And it's fun! I spent the whole time watching it with the BIGGEST grin on my face. (Oh, and the second time I went to see it, during the first Black Widow scene when she's just walking away from the fight, this little girl a few rows behind us says out loud "WOW SHE'S AWESOME!" Audience clapped.)

I don't get the "Loki needs a hug" ideology. (I blame Tom Hiddleston for that one.) For the first part of Thor, maybe, especially after finding out his true heritage, but once he snaps? I'm getting the hell out of there. DEFINITELY not during the Avengers. There's a reason why people cheered during the Ruffalo-izing.

OH AND ALL THE FEELS FOR MARK RUFFALO. My sister has declared the last two Hulk movies as non-canon because they do not have Mark Ruffalo the One True Banner. He's the single best part of the whole thing. If Iron Man 3 doesn't have one scene- included or deleted- of Tony and Bruce SCIENCE BROS FOREVER, there will be torches and pitchforks and me leading the way.

As for the potential Justice League movie- I think DC needs to stop and evaluate what the hell they're doing before they start one. As much as I love the Nolanverse (Dark Knight Rises comes out on my birthday weekend woooo! And filmed in my hometown!), the other stuff's been kind of...eh. I didn't think that Green Lantern was horrible, but there was so much that they COULD do with it. Same thing with Wonder Woman- that could be a fantastic movie, provided they got someone who really cared about the project. And I do think if they were going to do a JLA, they could at least skip info-dumping Superman and Batman. They've been around for nearly 80 years, the origins have been beaten to death. Give someone else the spotlight.

I have nothing else to say aside from more fangirling, so here's a clip of Chris Hemsworth dancing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJ8FGRalerw

    1. I think that the movie being fun is the most important part about it. It's just plain ENJOYABLE for just about everyone, and I can see why that's so mind-blowing for so many people. I like a movie that feels pretty dedicated to having fun.

I am currently (right now) writing the longest post about the woobification of Loki and basically breaking down Loki's character through both movies (hence how long it is) so yeah. Honestly, I think he's a marvelous and complex villain, and I love him for that, and I find that turning him into a wooby really simplifies him in too many ways. Also, I am pretty sure I could watch Loki get Ruffalized over and over and over again. That's pretty damn satisfying.

**I'm gonna talk about predictions on the next Batman movie which some might consider spoilery**

It's hard to tell from such an early stage but planning a Justice League movie would be pretty premature at this stage. They only have one strong franchise to run off of right now, Batman. And if a lot of people are correct about it, Bale's Batman may die or be permanently injured into being not-Batman in this movie (this is based on Bane being, uh, there) so really, they would have to start from scratch.

      **end potential not-really spoilers**

Also, I have seen that video of Hemsworth. A lot. Dem hips. *ahem*

    2. I think the beauty of Loki is that he goes from "Oh my, you poor thing!" to "Whoa. Congrats on going completely evil and destroying all pity I had for you." It makes you feel just as betrayed as the characters are. And yes, I have no doubt that it's related to the fact that Tom Hiddleston is a beautiful man with a wonderfully sexy voice.

I agree on skipping Batman & Superman's origins. At the most, you could describe them in one minute's time in a debriefing or something. Green Lantern is the one superhero film I haven't watched yet, so I'm not sure how well that movie would fit into it. Also, we completely forgot that Zack Snyder is making The Man of Steel, so I'm not sure how that will factor into the equation.

In regards to that spoiler you mention, Bethany:

That's interesting. In the comics, he found a mystical way to heal his broken back. In the cartoon when they adapted it, Batman managed to stop him right before he did it. I can't see Nolan going the mystical healing route, because except for that moment in Batman Begins where he somehow talks to bats, he's kept it pretty grounded. On the other hand it seems like a "screw you" to DC and any future director if you put him out of commission. Sort of guaranteeing that you would have to reboot from then on. You would think they wouldn't allow him to do that. We shall see.

    3. Green Lantern had potential to do a really good story, and it had a good cast, but it felt like the writers went "Oh, let's just have him do cool stuff now." I'm not as a huge comics fan, but I know they could have done a lot more with Hal.

I don't know if I'll feel...I guess cheated if Nolan decides to put Batman out of commission in TDKR because on the one hand, at least future Bat-films will have to be reboots or heavy derailing in bringing back Batman. On the other, it would be a massive screw you to the film companies. It's Nolan's story, and I think that he just wants to finish it out and not have the films be dragged out to camp again.

God, I love Tom Hiddleston, just because he's so over-joyed to be in the Marvel movies and he's having a wonderful time playing such a magnificent bastard.

    4. It would definitely mean that future bat-films would have to be rebooted or something, but I honestly don't think a Justice League film would really work in the Nolan-verse anyway. His Bat-verse is dependant on Batman being the only one that can handle this shit, and introducing Wonderwoman or Supes to the situations, or even a sidekick, would throw the whole thing off. This is, I believe, why Nolan has so far avoided having any hint of there being a Robin.

So I wouldn't be surprised if they reboot Batman no matter what happens in TDKR.

  2. I'm inclined to go with the "That's fangirls" explanation of Loki Woobification simply because that happens a lot. See: Andrew Scott as Moriarity in the BBC Sherlock. I have some friends who are all about that stuff.

I want to want to like Nolan's Batman series but I don't care for DC as a whole and anyway Heath Ledger's Joker scared me so badly as to put me off Batman. I'm all about Marvel though.

Also: Mark Ruffalo is the One True Hulk. He's just so good. And Bruce and Tony and SCIENCE BROS and I totally ship it.

I've just listened to your episode on Sherlock Holmes; now I'll have to look into some others.

    1. I still haven't seen Series 2 of Sherlock yet (I know, I know, I'm a bad fangirl) but I can see people doing that with Moriarity, even though that makes even less sense than with Loki.

That's interesting about the Joker. The fact that he's so unsettling is what draws me to him, but I can see how it could also turn someone away.

Glad you're enjoying it! Depending on how long it takes for them to review it, we should be up on iTunes soon. Until you mentioned it, I had no idea we had to go through that process in order to get added, so I owe you thanks for that. :)
